Harris Evans
v.
Narconon Northern California, Association For Better Living and Education, Narconon International/Doe1, Does 2-100, Dr. Stephen Stein aka Dr. Steven Stein, Mike DiPalma & Does 1-50
Filed under: California, Narconon of Northern California, Narconon Watsonville, Redwood Cliffs, United States, Vista Bay (Watsonville), Watsonville, CA

Court: Superior Court of California - Los Angeles County
Case Number: BC481302
Date: March 22, 2012
Plaintiff's Attorney(s): Eric V. Traut
Defendant's Attorney(s): Elizabeth M. Kessel; Thomas E. Still
Disposition: Dismissed

Summary:

This is the lawsuit filed by the son, Harris Evans, the Narconon patient. On January 6, 2012 Narconon “Vista Bay” accepted Harris Evans, a 5150 involuntary commitment patient in California who suffered from schizophrenia and substance abuse, as a patient at their facility. This was done as a transfer patient from Kedren Acute Psychiatric Hospital in Los Angeles to its facility in Watsonville, CA via coordination with Greg Potts of Carpe Diem Intervention Services and Consultation.

Additional Info:

Harris' transfer was done at the request of Evans' mother, Anise Evans, after she was told by Potts and Mike DiPalma that "Vista Bay" would provide 24/7 care by attending physician. Evans' son, Harris Evans, agreed to the treatment as described. There was no mention that it was a Narconon facility or that the program is based upon Scientology writings.

Harris Evans had a history of being repeatedly committed for serious psychotic episodes. On January 7th, Narconon's Medical Director, Dr. Stein, took Harris Evans off his psychiatric medications. He was not permitted to take his medications although his mother had packed them with his belongings given to Mr. Potts for Evan's stay at "Vista Bay". They had been taken away from Potts. Harris Evans' condition "quickly spiraled out of control." By January 11th, Evans was progressively more paranoid and delusional, causing a problem for Narconon and resulting in a call to the mother to come to a certain intersection in Bakersfield on January 14th and pick her son up. They refused her requests to call 911 or take him to the emergency room. She and her husband rushed from Los Angeles to pick him up.

Narconon staff dumped Harris Evans on the street and left. When Anise and her husband, Robert Gallion, arrived from their long drive to pick him up, they had to look for him on the streets. When they found him, he was hallucinating, delusional, violent, and psychotic. They got him in the car and began the drive home. While in route back to Los Angeles, Harris Evans attacked and choked his step-father, Robert Gallion, to death in the car.

Robert Gallion's minor daughter, Ivy Freeman, and son Nico Gallion have filed a related case, Number PC052807, Nico Gallion, Ivy Freeman - Minor Plaintiff v. Narconon of Northern California, G. Megan Shields, M.D., Stephen Michael Stein, M.D., and Harris Evans, which we would like to get.
